A bit of Introduction for installing OSMC on Raspberry Pi 3 B+
We always want a media center in our homes. In this article, we will discuss about installing OSMC on the new Raspberry Pi 3 B+. OSMC stands for Open Source Media Center. There is only one parent member for OSMC it is Kodi.
Kodi is a free and open-source media player software application developed by the XBMC Foundation, a non-profit technology consortium. Kodi is available for multiple operating systems and hardware platforms, with a software 10-foot user interface for use with televisions and remote controls. When we install Kodi on the Raspberry Pi, we can control it through the HDMI Serial Communication. That means our media center can be controlled by our very own remote controller used on TV’s.

OSMC is a free and open source media player which is based on Linux. It is founded in 2014, OSMC lets you play back media from your local network, attached storage or even from the Internet. OSMC is the leading media center in terms of feature set and community and is based on the Kodi project. OSMC is now install-able on the Raspberry pi. Which in fact has all the necessary hardware such as HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface), Audio Jack, USB and Ethernet Ports and also, one display and camera modules.
Installing Kodi on the Raspberry Pi 3 B+
- Download OSMC image file.
- Extract the “.img” file to a location with WinRar.
- Prepare a minimum 1 GB Memory Card.
- Download SD Card Formatter and Win32DiskImager.
- Format the SD Card with the Formatter.
- Open Win32DiskImager and Click on Open.
- Select the extracted img file and Click on write.
- This will take some time.
- Plug in your SD Card to the Pi.
- Power it up !
- You will see some creepy boot screens as always.
- You will see the Basic Setup options.
- Continue the setup with your needs.
- You are done setting up Kodi on the Pi.

Add-ons in OSMC on Raspberry Pi 3 B+
Kodi comes with a wide variety of add-ons that are developed to improve the altogether experience of using the Software. The add-ons that it uses run a super-variety of functionalities which ranges from simple screensavers and weather apps to tools that let you enhance your viewing experience.
When it comes to the video, you’ll find several channels, like DIY Network , ABC Family, and, these are available in the add-ons store. There are also various services which can stream podcasts, like the Apple iTunes Podcasts, as well as programs that will display lyrics with each song you play.
Add-ons that we use in Kodi are not developed by the XMBC Foundation. They are developed by millions of users or programmers.
You won’t be affected by using Kodi add-ons if they are released in public. Kodi add-ons released by some users were caught in some law suits. Still, yo wont be affected.
Kodi is Legal and Safe
On looking at a distance, Kodi is a media center which collects your files. And, the owner of the files are no one but you. So, there should be no reason for Kodi to be illegal.

Kodi is safe if you use it for legal purposes and It wont cause you any trouble. However, add-ons might be different in this case.
Kodi has a forum for it’s users to deal with various add-ons. There is a bit of possibility that the add-ons that we sometimes download are unstable and may affect the Entire working of the system. So, we must ensure that the add-on that we download is well maintained and is of good quality.
Live TV on Kodi
In Kodi, you can watch live TV. You will need to buy a PVR device and add a PVR Client through addons. The simplest thing that we can do in this is record TV playbacks. Kodi can really replace TV connection if we are willing to watch the shows not on time with internet. Which means that we can watch it in a different time through the video addons.
YouTube on Kodi
Yes, we will get a app for YouTube in Kodi. Where we can watch all the YouTube content and also, we can login and watch live telecasts too. But the User Interface for YouTube in Kodi is not appreciable.
